This paper presents a comparative analysis of amplitude and Doppler spectra statistics from monostatic and bistatic sea clutter data at S-band. These data cover a range of bistatic angles from 60° to 120° and include simultaneous monostatic and co-polarized and cross-polarized bistatic recordings, providing direct comparison of their statistical properties. The time series of amplitude data are fitted to the compound K and K+Noise distribution in the range domain and in the Doppler domain, and the variation of the shape parameter is presented for monostatic and co-polarized and cross-polarized bistatic data as an indication of the spikiness of the clutter. From the analysis of this parameter it is shown that cross-polarized bistatic data tend to be less spiky in the range and Doppler domain than the simultaneous co-polarized bistatic data, and than the simultaneous monostatic data, which could be advantageous in terms of radar detection performance, especially for low-visibility maritime targets.

This paper reviews the published literature on the characteristics of mono-static radar sea-clutter observed with high grazing angles (typically above about 10°). To date, most of the analysis and modelling of sea-clutter has been undertaken at low grazing angles with the main application being for surface and airborne maritime radars. The paper identifies some of the data sets that have been collected and the empirical models that have been developed from them for the normalised radar crosssection. The amplitude statistics and Doppler spectra of high grazing angle clutter are reviewed and the implications for radar design and target detection are discussed.

Radar backscatter from the sea-surface is typically nonstationary and may contain sea-spikes which resemble targets and can cause false detections in a radar system. To improve detection performance, this paper investigates a technique based on stationary wavelet transforms (SWT) and demonstrates its performance on both monostatic and bistatic seaclutter data. By exploiting the different components (subbands) of the SWT decomposition, this technique can better distinguish between the different spectral components of the returned signal. The detection performance is measured by Monte Carlo simulation with a cell averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) detector. The most appropriate choice of sub-band is selected using an a entropy based metric.
