“…Aspects of thermohaline circulation and Ekman transport interact to promote seasonal upwelling (ALVAREZ-BORREGO, 2002;BRAY, 1988;BRAY and ROBLES, 1991;RODEN, 1964). As a result, primary biological productivity is prodigious (ALVAREZ-BORREGO and LARA-LARA, 1991;ZEITZSCHEL, 1969), and the region supports a diverse array of marine invertebrates that commonly secrete calcareous shells, skeletons, or tests (BRUSCA, 1980;KEEN, 1971). Numerous localities with carbonate-sand beaches occur as pockets along the length of the peninsula's gulf coast (CARRANZA-EDWARDS et al, 1998).…”

“…-(Reeve 1864a: 440) The above diatribe is amusing as the first sentence describes, to some extent, Reeve's own actions. Contrary to Reeve's prediction, both of the Carpenter taxa discussed are now treated as valid (Keen 1971) as Pitar pollicaris (Carpenter, 1864a) and Transennella puella (Carpenter, 1864a). Reeve's snide comment about "the soft parts of the shells" is particularly ridiculous.…”

“…Even so, morphological variation is present within the species and accounts of species distribution along the Pacific coast of North and Central America differ, or at most are unclear. For example, the reported range of N. subnodosus varies from Keen (1971), who reports it ranges as far south as Peru, to Smith (1991), who reports the southern boundary of N. subnodosus lies at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula while a third species, N. arthriticus , is present southward. Recent phylogenetic work on Pectinids include that by Saavedra and Peña (2006) and Puslednik and Serb (2008), which show N. subnodosus and N. nodosus to be monophyletic; however, neither report N. arthriticus .…”
