In the present study, the effect of the anticipated sea-level rise is investigated along the coastal zone extending in between Chalkoutsi and Nea Palatia that is located in southern coast of the semi-enclosed Southern Evoikos Gulf. The terrestrial part of the coastal zone consists of low-lying alluvial deposits, including the sensitive coastal environments of the delta of Asopos river and the Oropos lagoon located ~3 km to the east of the R. Asopos mouth. The area under investigation is already under erosion (locally, coastline retreat accounts for several metes) despite the fact that it is exposed to moderate wave conditions (average wave heights <1 m, with maximum values <2.7 m). The calcu-lated loss of coastal land, due to the anticipated sea-level rise of 0.38 m and 1 m, accounts 4-4.5 km2 and 21-23.5 km2, respectively.

Only, general curves can be used (Lambeck, 2004;Lambeck & Purcell, 2005;Pavlopoulos, Kapsimalis, Theodorakopoulou, & Panagiotopoulos, 2011;Poulos, Chionis, & Maroukian, 2009) and must be refined, taking into account local Holocene neotectonic movements. Our data-set does not allow reconstructing an accurate sea level curve, since we have relatively few dates from the marine sequence and brackish plants associated with charcoals are not suitable for evaluation of the sea level position.…”

This article examines the shoreline evolution and human occupation in the vicinity of the important archeological site of Amarynthos (Euboea Island, Greece) over the last six millennia. Archeological evidence indicates a continuous occupation of the site from the Bronze Age to the Roman period and the site is well-known, thanks to the existence of a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Based on the study of four boreholes, a paleogeographic reconstruction of the coastal landscape is proposed. Facies were determined based on mollusc identification, and sedimentology based on grain-size measurements (hand sieving for the fraction above 2 mm and LASER technique for particles below 2 mm) and loss-on-ignition. In addition, a series of 12 AMS radiocarbon dates define a reliable chronostratigraphy. Results suggest the presence of a fully marine environment from the early Holocene to ca. 2600-2400 cal. BC, which developed into a brackish environment from ca. 2600-2400 cal. BC to ca. 750 cal. BC due to the deltaic progradation of the nearby stream (Sarandapotamos River). From ca. 750 cal. BC onward, coastal swamps prevailed in the study area. Human-environmental interaction is discussed and particular attention is paid to the paleolandscape configuration of Amarynthos.

Palaeogeographical reconstruction of the battle terrain in Ancient Thermopylae, Greece

The battle of Thermopylae (Malian Gulf, Central Greece) is one of the most famous ancient battles in European and world history. It took place on a narrow strip of land where it was possible for a few thousand Greeks to fight against the Persian army. The geomorphology of the battle terrain has changed significantly since ancient times due to the Sperchios River delta progradation. In this work an attempt is being made to undertake a palaeogeographical reconstruction of the pass and the battle terrain in Ancient Thermopylae in order to set out new information based on new geoarchaeological data. Geomorphological data in combination with geological, stratigraphical, paleontological data of an extensive drilling project supported by electrical resistivity tomography led to the determination of the palaeoenvironmental changes in the area of the Thermopylae Pass and for the palaeogeographical reconstruction of the battle terrain in ancient Thermopylae. The results of this research showed that in the "middle gate" of the Thermopylae Pass between the land and the sea there was a freshwater marsh supplied with large quantities of warm water coming from the thermal springs. The chronostratigraphical and sea level data confirmed its existence when the battle had taken place in 480 BC. This also confirms Herodotus' description that the road eastwards of Thermopylae was shut in by the sea and by marshes.
