Sea Level Acceleration in the China Seas

Abstract: While global mean sea level rise (SLR) and acceleration (SLA) are indicators of climate change and are informative regarding the current state of the climate, assessments of regional and local SLR are essential for policy makers responding to, and preparing for, changes in sea level. In this work, three acceleration detection techniques are used to demonstrate the robust SLA in the China Seas. Interannual to multidecadal sea level variations (periods >2 years), which are mainly related to natural internal clim… Show more

“…To further test our guess, we compare the results of S_TIDE with those of EMD. The EMD method is extremely useful for nonstationary and nonlinear time series and has been widely applied to different kinds of geophysical data (Cheng et al, , ; Ezer, ; Ezer & Corlett, ; Ezer et al, ; Pan et al, ). Assuming that nonstationary signals are composed of oscillations on different time scales, the EMD method aims to extract these oscillations called intrinsic mode functions (Huang et al, ).…”

“…장기간 변화되는 해수 면은 발해만과 황해에 인위적인 연안 공사로부터 영향을 받 으며, 조석 비대칭에 변화를 줄 수 있다 (Pelling et al, 2013;김현정 • 서승원 Suh et al, 2014;Suh, 2016). 또한 18.6년 주기의 장주기 조석 변화에 따라 해수면에 장기간 영향을 미친다 (Baart et al, 2012;Cheng et al, 2016;Pugh and Woodworth, 2014;Watson, 2015). Watson(2015) (Pelling et al, 2013).…”

“…In addition, comparing our estimates with the results of Feng and Tsimplis [10] indicates the trends derived from the tide gauges are 2.0-14.1 mm/yr with an average trend of 6.0 mm/yr from 1954 to 2012, the large discrepancy might have resulted from the uncorrected vertical land motion in tide gauge records and the data used covering different time spans. Interannual sea-level variability is related to ENSO and PDO around Taiwan [43,44]. Figure 5 shows the interannual sea-level variability around Taiwan, derived from altimeter data that has been smoothed with an 11-month running mean, and overlaid with the low-pass filtered SOI and PDO (smoothed with the 11-month and five-year running mean, respectively).…”
