Sea Breeze Geoengineering to Increase Rainfall over the Arabian Red Sea Coastal Plains

Abstract: The Red Sea (RS) has a high evaporation rate, exceeding 2 m of water per year. The water vapor is transported from the shorelines by sea breezes as far as 200 km landward. Relative humidity in the vicinity of the RS exceeds 80% in summer. Nevertheless, precipitation is scarce in most of the Arabian RS coastal plain. In this work we use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) regional model to assess how deliberate changes (geoengineering) in the surface albedo or convertion of bare land to wide-leaf forests… Show more

“…The land surface emissivity directly affects surface temperature. The rate of surface heating or cooling ( 𝐴𝐴 𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 𝑠𝑠 𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 ) is given by the following surface heat budget equation (Bright et al, 2015;Deardorff, 1978;Mostamandi et al, 2022),…”

“…Simulations were carried out with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (V4.2.1, Powers et al, 2017). WRF has been used in the region for numerous model evaluation and process (Branch et al, 2021;Fonseca et al, 2020;Valappil et al, 2020;Wehbe et al, 2019;Nelli et al, 2020;Schwitalla et al, 2020), and rainfall modification studies (Mostamandi et al, 2022;Wulfmeyer et al, 2014;. Here, we use the same domain, resolution and configuration to Branch et al, 2021, who improvements to the MYNN planetary boundary layer (PBL), surface layer, dynamics and land surface schemes, as well as vapor mixing ratio (Q-2m) diagnostics.…”

“…Panels could be darkened with black paint of albedo ~5% could be used to coat the panels, or even specialist coatings with < 1% albedo (Theocharous et al, 2014). Other surfaces which may modify weather are solar PV panels (Li et al, 2018;Lu et al, 2021;Mostamandi et al, 2022). These are typically of the mono-or poly-crystalline type, with very low albedos of between ~0.04 (Nemet, 2009) and ~0.1 (Zachariou & Protogeropoulos, 2010).…”

“…Remarkably, to our knowledge, no studies have examined the equilibrium (months or longer) precipitation response to a mesoscale albedo anomaly in isolation , that is, without coincident anomalies in surface roughness or other land surface properties (see Figure S1 in Supporting Information for an overview of how this study relates to previous literature (Charney, 1975; Devaraju et al., 2015; Evans et al., 2017; Hales et al., 2004; Li et al., 2018; Mostamandi et al., 2022; Oleson et al., 2010; Ouyang et al., 2022; Physick & Tapper, 1990; Sharma et al., 2016; Taylor et al., 2022; Vahmani et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2000; Xue & Shukla, 1993; Zonato et al., 2021)). This response is of fundamental interest, but also has important practical relevance.…”
