RésuméPlusieurs recherches montrent la forte présence d'une identité bilingue chez les jeunes francophones du Canada à l'extérieur du Québec. La présente étude propose un modèle conceptuel visant une explication de ce phénomène et présente les résultats d'une étude empirique pancanadienne. L'étude montre que lorsque la concentration territoriale des francophones (CTF) est forte, le métissage identitaire est surtout lié à l'attraction de la langue anglaise et reflète surtout des sentiments de compétence dans cette langue (bilinguisme d'attraction). Lorsque la CTF est faible, ce sont les sentiments d'appartenance à la communauté francophone qui constituent le principal marqueur de l'identité bilingue (bilinguisme de résistance). AbstractA number of research studies show the strong presence of a bilingual identity among young Francophones in Canada who live outside Quebec. This article proposes a conceptual model designed to explain this phenomenon and provides the results of a Canada-wide empirical study. The study indicates that when the territorial concentration of Francophones (TCF) is high, the identity métissage is linked primarily to the attraction of the English language and reflects above all the feelings of competency in that language (bilingualism of attraction). When the TCF is low, it is primarily the feelings of belonging to the Francophone community that constitute the main marker of bilingual identity (bilingualism of resistance).
