SDS Electrophoresis on Gradient Polyacrylamide Gels as a Semiquantitative Tool for the Evaluation of Proteinuria

Abstract: Proteinuria is an important sign of kidney diseases. Different protein patterns in urine associated with glomerular, tubular and overload proteinuria may be differentiated using the immunochemical detection of indicator proteins or via urinary proteins electrophoresis. Our aim was to characterize sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) using commercially available 4–20% gradient gels as a method to detect and differentiate proteinuria. Our laboratory-based study used excess urine … Show more

“…-Electrophoresis for protein oxidation: Gel electrophoresis techniques, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), can reveal changes in protein profiles due to oxidation [82]. -Mass spectrometry for lipid and protein oxidation products: Mass spectrometry techniques, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), are used to identify specific lipid and protein oxidation products and assess their abundance [83].…”

“…SDS-PAGE (PolyAcrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) with polyacrylamide gel at a low percentage (4%) separates the proteins primarily by mass [ 51 ]. However, the high content of carbohydrates in the apo(a) makes it difficult to obtain an accurate molecular weight estimation in SDS-PAGE gels [ 52 ].…”
