SDR Proof-of-Concept of Full-Duplex Jamming for Enhanced Physical Layer Security

Abstract: In order to secure wireless communications, we consider the usage of physical-layer security (PLS) mechanisms (i.e., coding for secrecy mechanisms) combined with self-interference generation. We present a prototype implementation of a scrambled coding for secrecy mechanisms with interference generation by the legitimate receiver and the cancellation of the effect of self-interference (SI). Regarding the SI cancellation, four state-of-the-art algorithms were considered: Least mean square (LMS), normalized least… Show more

“…For example, privacy information in health care, the journey or location of vehicles in transportation and the position or confidential information of the targets need to be protected. Regarding security protection for wireless communications, several conventional approaches, such as cryptography [ 1 ] or physical layer security [ 2 , 3 , 4 ], have been implemented. These methods only target preventing the confidential content of messages from being stolen by eavesdroppers.…”

“…The presence of SI will reduce the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver and leads to low overall performance. Considering the PLS in FD transmission, the security approaches involving the simultaneous transmission of the self-jamming or Artificial Noise (AN) have attracted a huge research interest due to their robustness promising performance [ 13 , 14 ]. The self-jamming technique is usually used to make the interception and the correct message decoding impossible for the eavesdroppers, even if they have equivalent or better channel conditions than the legitimate receiver.…”

“…The main characteristics of an SDR platform that will influence the performance of a monitoring station are as follows: frequency range, sampling frequency and resolution of the digital–analog converter [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. The applications of SDR platforms have expanded as a result of the benefits offered by software processing, a series of results that have been recently reported in many areas [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
