In order to maintain stable communication in 5G wireless networks, the link between a 5G base station and user equipment (UE) should be constantly monitored and adapted to the time-varying wireless channel. The use of UE for seamless information exchange is based on obtaining a target reference signal. The method used to obtain the reference signal involves identifying the index of the reference signal received from the 5G base stations. However, the existing index identification method employed in commercial 5G networks is based on the blind detection method, which is inefficient in terms of time and can cause misdetections. On the other hand, machine learning (ML), which is statistically predictable through data accumulation, can be robust in practical network environments. Taking this into account, we build a dataset consisting of reference signal data collected in a real-world 5G network environment to obtain an optimal machine learning model that is applicable to practical 5G networks. We evaluate a total of 23 index classification models by combining six ML models and three data pre-processing methods. The results of the study represent optimized combinations of ML-based index classifiers and data pre-processing methods. Performance differences between neural network (NN) models and non-NN models are also revealed.

With improved technological successions, wireless communication applications have been incessantly evolving. Owing to the challenges posed by the multipath wireless channel, radio design prototypes have become elemental in all wireless systems before deployment. Further, different signal processing requirements of the applications, demand a highly versatile and reconfigurable radio such as Software Defined Radio (SDR) as a crucial device in the design phase. In this paper, two such SDR modules are used to develop an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wireless link, the technology triumphant ever since 4G. In particular, a non-coherent end-to-end OFDM wireless link is developed in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band at a carrier frequency of 470 MHz. The transmitter includes Barker sequences as frame headers and pilot symbols for channel estimation. At the receiver, pulse alignment using Max energy method, frame synchronization using sliding correlator approach and carrier offset correction using Moose algorithm are incorporated. In addition, wireless channel is estimated using Least Square (LS) based pilot aided channel estimation approach with denoising threshold and link performance is analyzed using average Bit Error Rate (BER), in different pilot symbol scenarios. In a typical laboratory environment, the results of BER versus receiver gain show that with 4 pilot symbols out of 128 carriers, at a gain of 20 dB, BER is 0.160922, which is reduced to 0.136884 with 16 pilot symbols. The developed link helps OFDM researchers to mitigate different challenges posed by the wireless environment and thereby strengthen OFDM technology.

There is a widespread misconception that for building a ground station to receive satellite images, firstly an authorized license is required and secondly, huge parabolic dishes with specialized RF receivers are necessary and much more costly devices. This is however, not the case. While the space industry keeps growing, the need for low cost solutions increases. This applies also to the ground station systems. In this paper, we describe how to build a lowest cost reception ground station for meteorological satellites and how to use some necessary software to track, receive and decode the images sent every day. National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) has a group of satellites that provide weather data continuously. The data also helps humanity in disaster management since the satellite launch. The NOAA weather satellites, broadcast an Automatic Picture Transmission APT signal, containing a weather picture of any zone in the world. These signals show up at around ~137 MHz, and just when a satellite is passing overhead. Each satellite has a different frequency.
