Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is known to be one of the most lethal attacks in traditional network architecture. In this attack, the attacker uses botnets to overwhelm network resources. Botnets can be randomly compromised computers or IoT devices that are used to generate excessive traffic towards the victim, and as a result, legitimate users cannot access the services. In this research, software-defined networking (SDN) has been suggested as a solution to fight DDoS attacks. SDN uses the idea of centralized control and segregation of the data plane from the control plane. SDN is more flexible, and policy implementation on the centralized controller is easy. SDN is now being widely used in modern network paradigms because it has enhanced security. In this work, an entropy-based statistical approach has been suggested to detect and mitigate TCP SYN flood DDoS attacks. The proposed algorithm uses a three-phased detection scheme to minimize the false-positive rate. Entropy, standard deviation, and weighted moving average have been used for intrusion detection. Multiple experiments were performed, and the results show that the suggested approach is more reliable and lightweight and has a minimal false-positive rate.

The direct and two-way communication between energy suppliers and high-frequency smart meters enables the suppliers to implement dynamic pricing and manage demand response. Fine-grained monitoring of energy consumption also helps consumers improve their energy profile. This granularity, however, may impose a threat on household privacy. Detailed profile of energy usage can be mapped into detailed profile of daily activities. Many proposals attempted to mitigate this problem and introduce privacy-preserving smart metering. The main approach is to process meter data before they are sent to the energy provider, through de-identification, aggregation or encryption. This processing can take place locally on the smart meter itself, or through a trusted third party. Such solutions suffer from increased smart meter complexity or increased infrastructure complexity, which may render them unacceptable. The idea described in this paper aims to avoid those drawbacks by proposing a new architecture to implement privacy-aware metering. The proposed approach employs the concept of software-defined networking (SDN) to manage smart-meter data in a separate control layer inside the home network. Leveraging the concept of SDN puts the control back in the hands of the consumers to manage their own privacy via SDN applications, and relieves the supplier from enduring extra complexities.

Introducción: Aunque el SDN se originó en el mundo académico, los REN académicos no han implementado ampliamente SDN en su red de producción, SDN nos da un nuevo rumbo arquitectónico que permite a la red ser controlada de manera inteligente y central, también permite ser programada, utilizando aplicaciones de software. Lo cual contribuye a que los operadores administren toda la red de manera eficiente, integral y constante, independientemente de la tecnología de red subyacente. Objetivo: Determinar los parámetros para aplicar SDN correctamente en infraestructura de redes educativas Método: Para poder contestar la pregunta de investigación planteada, se planifica un proceso metodológico dividido en 2 etapas: Análisis teórico y Análisis de los factores que influyen al aplicar SDN en redes educativas. Resultado: Se presentan una perspectiva basada en los servicios de los usuarios de las redes de comunicaciones de universidades, y a su vez en base a la investigación se proponen factores relacionados con SDN al implementar este tipo de redes. Conclusiones Los factores que se añaden al diseño de infraestructura de telecomunicaciones al aplicar a una red universitaria son: Gestión automatizada de la red. Gestión de actualizaciones de la red. Lenguaje de políticas de red. Seguridad. Eficiencia energética. Virtualización de redes. Controladores SDN distribuidos. Medidas de red, Calidad de servicio y calidad de la experiencia del usuario QoE. Dispositivos IoT, en la universidad inteligente, Seguridad de la red.
