RFID (radio frequency identification) technology appeared nearly 70 years ago. Deployed more widely only from the early 2000s, it is now booming and its development is still accelerating. As its name indicates, its original function was the identification (of objects, animals, people) and its applications were then essentially aimed at traceability, access control and logistics. If this type of use is still relevant today with more and more new application contexts and more and more efficient RFID tags, RFID has also evolved by integrating new capabilities. These new tags, known as augmented tags, include an information capture function. With the explosion of connected objects and the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), this old technology that is RFID still has a promising future and will probably be more and more present in our private and professional environments in all fields: logistics, industry, agriculture, building, health and even space.

The safety of workers is significant when talking about large risky workplaces such as construction job sites. Therefore, we proposed a UHF-RFID tag antenna that can be used to identify various Job site equipments and also construction workers by tagging their wearable helmets. Here, the compact, low profile, and simple structured platform-tolerant RFID tag antenna is proposed and optimized for metal sheet and ABS-based safety helmets. Furthermore, WTMiddleware (Worker Tracking Middleware) using Javascript, CSS, and HTML has been implemented to demonstrate a real-time secured web-based remote access of workers to provide their actual on-site monitoring and tracking of construction equipment carried/operated by the workers for tracking solutions. First, the fabricated tag’s performance was tested successfully in an outdoor scenario on various mountable materials such as wood, glass, plastic, and metal. The tag yielded a reasonable read range of 5.9 m on metallic sheet and 7.1 m on plastic with the highest read distance of 9.3 m on a glass sheet. Also, the measurement setup along with developed WTMiddleware was deployed in an actual workplace to demonstrate practical utility of the designed tag affixed on workers’ safety helmets. It was observed that all the workers wearing tagged helmets were successfully identified, tracked, and monitored. Also, their real-time on-site details, working zone, and complete personal details were accessed through a developed web page application via WTMiddleware.

Bolts are widely used in civil engineering, and the detection of bolt loosening is of great significance to ensure the safety of a structure. This paper introduces a new method for detecting bolt loosening using a customized detachable strain sensor based on a patch antenna. A patch antenna with overlapping sub-patch is proposed to measure the longitudinal elongation of the entire bolt shaft, indicating the loosening state of the bolt. When the bolt is fastened, the elongation of the bolt under tension will change the combined length of the underlying patch and the radiation sub-patch, consequently increasing or decreasing the resonant frequency of the antenna. The resonant frequency of the antenna can be measured by the vector network analyzer. Furthermore, with wireless interrogation of the strain sensor based on the patch antenna, the proposed method can also be used in the wireless detection of bolt loosening. The authors conducted a finite element analysis of the bolt and the electromagnetic simulations of the antenna. They designed the detection sensor and conducted a series of experimental tests to demonstrate how a bolt under different applied preloads can be effective and feasible under the proposed method.
