Screw Relaxing Detection With UHF RFID Tag

Abstract: This paper presents a simple and low cost solution for the implementation of a screw relaxing sensor based on ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) passive tags. The proposed method opportunistically uses the natural capability of a metallic screw (or a metallic part fixed on a plastic screw) to realize an electrical continuity between two electrical lines, which is exploited to realize an open/closed switch mechanism associated to the tightened/relaxed screw status. Several switch-l… Show more

“…Tags could detect changes in movement, stress, strain, vibration, tilt, etc., often to control the state of a structure, as varied as that may be (tightening of a screw, building, aircraft wing) [ 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ], humidity, temperature, moisture [ 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ], corrosion and chemicals [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 ], and also pressure, light level, audible feedback, or biometric data, etc. Note that most of these measures can be absolute or relative, for example, to detect the passage of a threshold.…”

“…Te reader captures this stored data, and the acquired information is further transferred to the cloud database for remote access and monitoring objects. Hence, RFID is not only being employed for identifcation but also for special applications, e.g., hydrogen concentration monitoring [8], structural health monitoring [9], screw relaxing monitoring [10], and human parameters monitoring [11]. Tis is possible due to its benefts of easy deployment and low-cost solutions [12][13][14].…”

“…[24][25][26] Various antenna-based sensors have been proposed for strain sensing, temperature sensing, displacement sensing, crack sensing, screw relaxing detection, and package opening detection. [27][28][29][30] For example, Wen et al proposed a passive antenna-based sensor to indicate the tightened/ relaxed screw status. 29 Wang et al proposed a package opening detection method based on the unfolding or folding of a flexible antenna.…”
