Screening Scale Predicts Patients Successfully Receiving Long-term Implantable Left Ventricular Assist Devices

Abstract: The RFSS is simple, easy to apply, and statistically valid. Physicians could use the scale as a starting point in discussing the suitability for LVAD implantation in a specific patient and as a basis for comparing patient outcomes.

“…Despite the fact that VAD is a good support bridge to HTx, it is still impossible to implant VADs for all patients with heart failure or who are on ECMO. Good outcomes of VAD-supported patients depend on proper selection (13,(16)(17)(18)(19). Oz et al (13) suggested a useful RFSS for the selection of appropriate patients to receive VAD.…”

“…Good outcomes of VAD-supported patients depend on proper selection (13,(16)(17)(18)(19). Oz et al (13) suggested a useful RFSS for the selection of appropriate patients to receive VAD. That model provides a useful reference for patient selection and outcome prediction for VAD patients.…”

“…Before VAD implantation, patients must be screened for emotional and psychological readiness, family and social support, and home safety. 10,12,38 Family members or friends should be aware that the demands on them will be great; although the longterm demands of care providers decrease with time after heart transplantation, this is not the case with VADs.…”
