Screening rates for colorectal cancer in Canada: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Introduction: Implementation of population-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs should reduce disparities in participation in CRC screening. We estimated CRC screening rates in 2012 in Canada and assessed predictors of screening in provinces with and without well-established population-based screening programs. Methods:We used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey for 2012 to calculate the prevalence of up-to-date CRC screening, defined as fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) within 2 years b… Show more

“…21 The nature of Manitoba's universal health care plan (no premiums, comprehensive coverage of all residents irrespective of their age or SES, and continuous efforts to reduce potential SES disparities in access to health care services across the province) may also be contributing to the lack of CRC incidence variability by income. Our results are in contrast to the higher CRC incidence consistently reported among individuals living in lower SES areas in the US.…”

“…The screening for cancers in Canada is among the best in the world [4]; the study's findings could therefore not be applicable to populations where screening programs are not so well done, and where unprovoked venous thromboembolism most frequently may be the first manifestation of neoplasm.…”

“…Rates in the United States and Canada were about 25%-35% before 2003, but have increased to 55%-60% in 2012-2013 surveys. 8,9 Individuals with an FH of CRC are more likely to adhere to CRC screening recommendations compared to those with no FH. 3 But even among this higher-risk population, participation rates remain less than optimal.…”
