Screening of Salt Tolerant CIP Potato Germplasm for Saline Areas

Abstract: Fifteen salt tolerant CIP (International Potato Centre) Potato genotypes along with BARI (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute) Alu 7 (Diamant) and one local variety viz., Dohazari Sada were evaluated at Bashkhali, Chittagong during 2011-12 to screen the suitable genotypes for cultivation in saline areas of Bangladesh. Diamant and Dohazari Sada and all of the CIP genotypes were found to grow well up to 60 DAP (Days After Planting) at saline areas having healthy plants and no senescence was noticed but af… Show more

“…Till to date only HYVs have been used for generating potato plantlets in vitro. These HYVs have, however, shown to be salinity susceptible (Rahman et al 2013). But under present scenario of climate change, it is important to develop regeneration protocol for salt tolerant potato varieties.…”

“…The HYVs are under cultivation to meet the food demand. But recently, susceptibility of these HYVs toward salinity stress has resulted in tuber yield loss, thus, making them unsuitable for cultivation (Rahman et al 2013, Uddin et al 2010. To overcome these problems we need to cultivate stress tolerant varieties to ensure higher production.…”

“…Furthermore, the potato has a high export potential. However, due to low yield of local cultivars and saline susceptibility of available high yielding varieties (HYVs) are not economically suitable for their cultivation in saline soil (Rahman et al, 2013;Uddin et al, 2010). Therefore, high yielding salt tolerant exotic potato cultivars such as CIP 102, CIP 106, CIP 111, CIP 117, CIP 120, BARI Alu 72 (CIP 139), BARI Alu 73 (CIP 127) and CIP 136 can be cultivated in saline belt areas.…”
