Screening of antiradical, antilipoperoxidant and hepatoprotective effects of nine plant extracts used in Caribbean folk medicine

Abstract: The antagonistic activity of nine plant extracts, traditionally used in Caribbean folk medicine, versus rerf-butyl hydroperoxide has been evaluated on isolated hepatocytes. These results are completed by the evaluation of the antiradical potential of these extracts against a solution of diphenyl picryl hydrazyl radical. In all cases, an aqueous extract of R o s m h u s officinalis was used as a natural reference extract.

“…Radical scavenging activity was determined using a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay with modification (Joyeux, Mortier, & Fleurentin, 1995;Robards, Sanchez-Moreno, Larrauri, & Sauracalixto, 1998). Eight hundred ml of each extracts was mixed with 400 mL of 0.4 mmol/L methanolic DPPH.…”

“…The radical scavenging activity of extracts was determined using a modified assay for DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazol) scavenging (Joyeux, Mortier, & Fleurentin, 1995). A 0.1 ml aliquot of the extract solution (0.5-1 mg ml À1 ), 2 ml of 0.05 M acetate buffer (pH 5.5), 1.9 ml of methanol and 1 ml of 0.5 mM DPPH were mixed.…”
