Screening of Actinomycete Isolates from Niche Habitats in Manipur for Antibiotic Activity

Abstract: Problem statement:The exhaustion of the usual terrestrial sources and the rise of resistant pathogens dictate the search for novel actinomycetes and new antibiotics. In this context, niche habitats such as caves, pristine forests, lakes, rivers, and other wetlands, high salt environments, marine ecosystems and endophytic niches are promising targets for survey of bioactive actinomycetes. Approach: Actinomycetes were isolated from several niche habitats in Manipur, India, on selective media such as SCNA and Chi… Show more

“…In addition, biocontrol agents isolated outside the region and imported to Africa have performed inconsistently under field conditions (12). The development of indigenous biocontrol strains that suit local environments may help enhance competitiveness with in situ microorganisms and effectiveness at suppressing local pathogen strains (13).…”

“…Revegetation of tailings with wetlands should be sustainable for indefinite periods of time. The vegetation component provides the source of organic matter needed to drive the chemical reduction of sulphides and the subsequent precipitation of metal sulphides (Ningthoujam et al, 2009). Through these processes the metals and sulphates are returned to the form they were derived from originally in the mining process, as many metal ores are sulphide in nature.…”

“…All studies were mainly based on ecological and socio-economic studies (Jain et al, 2011;Ngasepam et al, 2015;Jain et al, 2007;Ningthoujam et al, 2009;Rai and Raleng, 2011;Rai and Singh, 2014). It is also found that there is lack of educational/institutional scientific research as all studies were mainly carried out by Government set up organization like Loktak Development Authority; Directorate of Environment).…”
