Screening for Porcine Deltacoronavirus in Human Serum Samples Via a Luminescent Immunoprecipitation System

Abstract

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an emerged coronaviral disease of swine circulating globally. The ability of PDCoV to infect avian and mammalian species and its recognized zoonotic capabilities make it an important pathogen to monitor for spread in humans. Here we present a pilot study in which 200 human serum samples from Midwest and East coast sites in the United States (U.S.) were screened utilizing a luminescent immunoprecipitation system. All samples tested negative for reactivity to PDCoV proteins suggesting that exposure to PDCoV is not yet widespread. Increased targeted serological surveys are needed to define the current incidence rates of PDCoV in humans
