Screening for Cancer in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Abstract: Implementation of VIA screening in several LMICs is conducive to future HPV screening programs when affordable HPV tests become widely available. Both HPV vaccination and HPV screening have a huge potential to eliminate cervical cancer in LMICs. A mammography screening program is a complex undertaking involving substantial resources and infrastructure that may not be feasible in many LMICs.

“…These tools allow for combined screening and treatment, known as the screen-and-treat approach that can be performed at the same sitting (Denny et al, 2005). Hence, there is a need to design an effective screening and treatment strategy that targets high-risk women once or twice in their lifetime, using a highly sensitive test, with emphasis on high coverage (>80%) of the targeted population (Sankaranarayanan et al, 2001).…”

“…31,32 Scientists have suggested that these new screening methods may well be more cost-effective and useful in countries with limited resources where the majority of the existing screening programmes have not shown clinically significant reductions in the incidence of cervical cancer. 26,31,33 Recently, the American Cancer Society released new guidelines for the early detection of cervical precancerous lesions and cancer, recommending concurrent screening using both the Pap smear and the HPV test. 34 However, in South Africa, even if the government does incorporate new screening methods into the national cervical screening policy, the existing low screening coverage rates will remain a considerable hindrance to the success of the screening programme.…”
