Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric illness in which one’s with minimal or non-existing defect in appearance shows significant distress and impairment in behavior and psychosocial functioning. Patients with body dysmorphic disorder seeking cosmetic surgery are usually unsatisfied with the outcomes of the surgery; this is why it is an important subject to be focused on. Moreover, physicians should consider the assessment of body dysmorphic disorder before undergoing any cosmetic procedures. Objective: To assess Body Dysmorphic Disorder in patients undergoing cosmetic procedures, and to improve the awareness of Body Dysmorphic Disorder among the providers of cosmetic treatment. Methods: This is a cross sectional study design, using the scale of body dysmorphic disorder modification of the Y-BOCS (BDD-YBOCS) adult version, consisting of 12 items regarding preoccupied thoughts of the participants and the effect on their lives. This scale individual respond to the light of the 5-point Likert-Type scale. We received 220 sample after distributing the questionnaire in different online platforms among females living in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Results: A total of 220 females participated in this cross-sectional study, 45 of them had Body Dysmorphic Disorder (prevalence rate of 20.5%) which shows a significant worrying percentage. Moreover, the results indicate that Body Dysmorphic Disorder is more among participants in the (20-35) year’s old age group. Furthermore, it shows a positive correlation between Body Dysmorphic Disorder and females seeking cosmetic procedures. Conclusion: we recognized that one-fifth of the participants were diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Whereas higher rates among those who underwent cosmetic procedures were detected. Therefore, we recommend implementing a Body Dysmorphic Disorder screening tool for patients seeking cosmetic procedures before undergoing it.

O Transtorno Dismórfico Corporal (TDC) acomete a visão do próprio paciente sobre seu corpo e a distorce, em diversas situações o TDC é prevalente em pacientes candidatos a cirurgias plásticas, buscando se encaixar num padrão social, tentando modificar uma ou diversas partes de seu corpo para atingir um resultado inalcançável. O objetivo foi trazer informações breves sobre o TDC no contexto da realização ou não de cirurgias plásticas estéticas, assim como avaliar o método diagnóstico utilizado pelos cirurgiões plásticos e suas condutas frente a esses pacientes. A pesquisa foi realizada pela plataforma GoogleForms, online, entrevistando 11 médicos formados e especializados em cirurgia plástica. A análise foi qualitativa com base na reflexão de cada profissional e os resultados submetidos à luz da análise de conteúdo. Houve unanimidade no conhecimento sobre o TDC e afirmações sobre que um paciente portador apresenta elevados índices de insatisfação, sendo assim, independentemente do resultado, procurariam mais cirurgias e outras formas de atingir seus objetivos.

BackgroundBody dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a prevalent mental disorder, particularly in those seeking plastic surgery, leading to unnecessary surgeries and postsurgical dissatisfaction. Among the plastic surgeries, rhinoplasty is the most commonly sought, yet the data on prevalence of BDD among the candidates of rhinoplasty is limited. Therefore, this systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of BDD in rhinoplasty candidates.MethodsThe online libraries of Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, Research Square, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched up to August 2022. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA software (v. 16). The heterogeneity was determined using the I2 statistic, and an overall estimated analysis was conducted. Subgroup analyses were performed on study year, age, gender, World Health Organization regional classification, sociodemographic index, country, sample size, and employed diagnostic tool. A meta‐regression analysis was performed to identify potential sources of heterogeneity.ResultsOut of 12,999 studies assessed, 18, with a combined sample size of 2132 individuals, met our criteria and were included in the study. The pooled prevalence of BDD was 32.7% (95% CI: 23.6−41.7; I2 = 96.45%). Subgroup analyses revealed the studies that were conducted in the European region (42.8%), with a sample size of ≥100 (40.2%), utilized the BDD modification of the Y‐BOCS (BDD‐YBOCS) diagnostic method (47.3%), and with a quality score of ≥6 (34.2%) demonstrated higher prevalence of BDD. The meta‐regression analysis identified a higher prevalence in the BDD‐YBOCS diagnostic method than in the BDD questionnaire (β: 0.23; 95% CI: 0.04−0.43; p = 0.022).ConclusionsThe prevalence of BDD is high in those seeking rhinoplasty. Clinicians should be aware of BDD symptoms to prevent unnecessary surgery and dissatisfaction. Public awareness through the media and access to affordable medical services should also be provided.
