Screen-printed nanoparticles as anti-counterfeiting tags

Abstract: Metallic nanoparticles with different physical properties have been screen printed as authentication tags on different types of paper. Gold and silver nanoparticles show unique optical signatures, including sharp emission bandwidths and long lifetimes of the printed label, even under accelerated weathering conditions. Magnetic nanoparticles show distinct physical signals that depend on the size of the nanoparticle itself. They were also screen printed on different substrates and their magnetic signals read out… Show more

“…Visible photoluminescent security ink is a technology based on ink glowing under UV illumination. There are many reports in this field, involving highly toxic, broadly luminescent and expensive nanomaterials such as CdS, CdSe and gold which are soluble in hazardous media . Moreover, these types of luminescent security inks are unstable .…”

“…There are many reports in this field, involving highly toxic, broadly luminescent and expensive nanomaterials such as CdS, CdSe and gold which are soluble in hazardous media. [7,8] Moreover, these types of luminescent security inks are unstable. [9] The unique optical and photoluminescent properties and low toxicity of materials based on lanthanides as activators open a new area in the anti-counterfeiting field.…”

“…The development of variety of materials capable of producing unbreakable security codes and markers are currently a hot topic of research . The selection of materials for development of security codes follows a stringent criterion that these should be stable for long time, easy to be synthesised with high yields at economical cost, eco‐friendly, difficult to counterfeit etc …”

“…[6] The selectiono fm aterials for developmento fs ecurity codes follows as tringentc riterion that these should be stable for long time, easy to be synthesised with high yields at economical cost, eco-friendly,d ifficult to counterfeite tc. [6][7][8][9][10] In the last decade, various kinds of luminescentm aterials like conventionalo rganic dyes, lanthanide based luminescent nanomaterials, [6][7][8][11][12][13][14][15] semiconductor quantum dots, [16][17][18][19][20][21] carbonb ased quantum dots, [22][23][24][25] plasmonic nanomaterials, [26][27][28][29][30] metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) [31][32][33][34] etc. have been explored for security ink fabrication to serve the purposeo f anti-counterfeiting applications.A ll the abovem entioned types have some pros and cons associated with them.…”
