Screen-detected gallstone disease and cardiovascular disease

Abstract: Knowledge about temporal associations for screen-detected gallstone disease and cardiovascular disease is limited. The objective of this study was to determine if screen-detected gallstones or cholecystectomy was associated with development of cardiovascular disease. A cohort study of three randomly selected groups from the general population of Copenhagen was performed. Participants (n = 5928) were examined 1982-1992 and underwent abdominal ultrasound examination to detect gallstone disease and were not infor… Show more

“…37 Gallstone disease has been linked to higher mortality and increased risks of major chronic diseases [e.g. metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) [38][39][40][41][42][43][44] ], indicating the possibility of shared pathways with other metabolic disorders. The mechanisms underlying SGD development are not well understood, but emerging evidence suggest an important role of insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia and an unfavourable lipid profile such as hypertriglyceridemia or low concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.…”

“…Cardiovascular disease is the most commonly mentioned extra-biliary manifestation of gallstones in recent studies. The causal relationship between cardiovascular disease and gallstones might be bidirectional, but it remains undetermined, since the literature has shown the risk of cardiovascular disease might increase or decrease after cholecystectomy and atherosclerosis has been shown to be capable of impairing gallbladder emptying [10][11][12][13][14]. Former epidemiologic studies have shown that gallstones disease is related to the development of prostate cancer [15][16][17][18].…”

“…Cardiovascular disease and biliary stone disease share risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cigarette smoking [18][19][20]. There also appears to be an association between gallstone disease and cardiovascular disease [21].…”
