α‐Sulfo Fatty Methyl Ester Sulfonate: A Review on Chemistry, Processing Technologies, Performance, and Applications in Laundry Detergents

Abstract: α-Sulfo fatty methyl ester sulfonate (α-MES) is one of the anionic surfactants that is currently used commercially in the cleaning industry. Although the fundamental studies on α-MES were initiated as far back as the 1950s, it was only recognized as a class of surfactant in the 1980s. In the initial stage of development, α-MES has been associated with many technical impediments, which created a fear factor for the detergent industry to consider this oleobased anionic surfactant for commercial production. “…Many industries, including Stepan Company of the United States (Stepan), KLK oleo of Malaysia, Chemithon Corporation of the United States, Lion Corporation of Japan, and others, use falling film reactors for precise contacting of the methyl ester with a mixture of SO 3 in dry air, generating an intermediate product, methyl ester sulfonic acid (MESA), which upon bleaching and neutralization forms MES (Siwayanan et al, 2021). Large-scale production plants are frequently outfitted with an air-SO 3 gas-generating system that uses molten sulfur as a starting material.…”

“…Today, the study of surfactants is changing rapidly, and these unique compounds are constantly being given new missions to meet our colorful daily lives with the changing times. From the oldest detergent soap, , to the “industrial monosodium glutamate” during the second industrial revolution, to the “reliable helper” of biological life science in the 21st century, , the efficient application of surfactants has increasingly become an important issue closely related to the quality of human life.…”

“…Eliminates C. acnes on clothes is an important strategy to prevent the recurrence and transmission. Nowadays, many markets across the world have switched from powder to liquid laundry detergent because it is more convenient and user-friendly [10]. In clinical work, dermatologists advise patients with acne to use powder laundry detergents rather than liquid detergents to clean their clothes, even though the powder and liquid detergents share similar ingredients.…”
