Developing a robust and facile process route for fatty acid methyl ester sulfonate (MES) synthesis is of importance for industrial applications. Herein, Taguchi orthogonal array (OA) approach was used for the first time to establish the optimum process condition for the sulfonation of methyl esters (ME) with chlorosulfonic acid (CSA). According to the experimental design, the most significant parameter was sulfonation temperature, followed by CSA/ME molar ratio. Under the optimum sulfonation conditions (that is, 70°C sulfonation temperature, 2.0 h sulfonation time, 1.5:1 mol/mol CSA/ME molar ratio and 2.0 h aging time), the MES yield and the corresponding signal/noise ratio were 92.08 ± 0.28% and 39.28, respectively. The obtained FTIR and 1H NMR data revealed spectra associated with methyl (CH2 asymmetric and CH2 symmetric stretching vibrations), esters (CO, CO, and OCH3), and sulfonate (SO) groups in the MES sample synthesized under optimal conditions, thus confirming the target MES product. Surface tension measurements revealed that the optimal MES sample had a low critical miscelle concentration of 0.082 g/L at a surface tension of 51.2 mN/m, implying the possibility of better performance.

In this paper, the interfacial properties of extended surfactants with different oxypropylene (PO) groups were comprehensively investigated by using interfacial dilational rheology. The differences in molecular orientation, spatial configuration, and relaxation process were compared at the gas–water interface and oil–water interface. The influences of the PO groups on the interface viscoelasticity were analyzed, providing important theoretical support for the wide application of extended surfactants. Experimental results show that the lower number of PO groups in extended surfactants does not cause differences in their presence states on the interface; however, once it increases, the longer PO segment will spiral up in the direction perpendicular to the interface, forming a spatial configuration like a thin cylinder. Compared with air, the PO group has better solubility in the oil phase. The chain segment can still maintain a helical extension from the beginning to the end as a result. However, the upper layer of the thin cylinder will collapse to a certain extent at the surface. Moreover, the orientation of the hydrophobic side has a dynamic process of “tilting to upright” with the increase of adsorption amount or in response to interfacial dilation and compression. The increase of PO number or the insertion of oil molecules has little effect on dilational modulus, and the interfacial film strength is generally relatively low. That is to say, the better emulsifying and solubilizing ability of PO-containing extended surfactants may be more attributed to the matching steric effect at interface or better packing action in bulk phase than to higher film strength.

Background: The Corona pandemic fuelled up skin pathogen challenges in young and adults, the antimicrobial efficacy of laundry detergents could be considered particularly. However, no available data focusing on the form of laundry detergent, additives and conditions affect the antimicrobial efficacy. This study simulated washing procedures to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of laundry detergents.Methods and Results: Mimic laundry procedures were performed to treat Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungus, colony counting and propidium iodide staining were used to assess the antimicrobial activity. Powder detergent A, NaBO3*4H2O with the tetraacetylethylenediamine, 2Na2co3.3H2O with tetraacetylethylenediamine could achieve a > 5-log10 reduction of three microbial colony generation. Anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate (SDBS) group had the strongest fluorescence intensity in three microbial propidium iodide staining.Conclusions: Powder form laundry detergents are superior to liquid form, peroxide-based bleaches and bleach activator in solid form, the solid surfactants with matched PH and alkyl chain length showed a considerable antimicrobial effect.
