Using the Tully-Fisher relation, we derive peculiar velocities for the 2MASS Tully-Fisher Survey and describe the velocity field of the nearby Universe. We use adaptive kernel smoothing to map the velocity field, and compare it to reconstructions based on the redshift space galaxy distributions of the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSCz). With a standard χ 2 minimization fit to the models, we find that the PSCz model provides a better fit to the 2MTF velocity field data than does the 2MRS model, and provides a value of β in greater agreement with literature values. However, when we subtract away the monopole deviation in the velocity zeropoint between data and model, the 2MRS model also produces a value of β in agreement with literature values. We also calculate the 'residual bulk flow': the component of the bulk flow not accounted for by the models. This is ∼ 250 km s −1 when performing the standard fit, but drops to ∼ 150 km s −1 for both models when the aforementioned monopole offset between data and models is removed. This smaller number is more in line with theoretical expectations, and suggests that the models largely account for the major structures in the nearby Universe responsible for the bulk velocity.

ABSTRACTWe derive peculiar velocities for the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) and describe the velocity field of the nearby (z < 0.055) Southern hemisphere. The survey comprises 8885 galaxies for which we have previously reported Fundamental Plane data. We obtain peculiar velocity probability distributions for the redshift-space positions of each of these galaxies using a Bayesian approach. Accounting for selection bias, we find that the logarithmic distance uncertainty is 0.11 dex, corresponding to 26 per cent in linear distance. We use adaptive kernel smoothing to map the observed 6dFGS velocity field out to cz ∼ 16 000 km s −1 , and compare this to the predicted velocity fields from the PSCz Survey and the 2MASS Redshift Survey. We find a better fit to the PSCz prediction, although the reduced χ 2 for the whole sample is approximately unity for both comparisons. This means that, within the observational uncertainties due to redshift-independent distance errors, observed galaxy velocities and those predicted by the linear approximation from the density field agree. However, we find peculiar velocities that are systematically more positive than model predictions in the direction of the Shapley and Vela superclusters, and systematically more negative than model predictions in the direction of the Pisces-Cetus Supercluster, suggesting contributions from volumes not covered by the models.

Purpose: Early soft tissue coverage of open lower extremity fractures within 72 hours of injury leads to improved outcomes. Little is known about outcomes when definitive fixation is completed first. The purpose of this study is to quantify postoperative outcomes when soft tissue reconstruction is delayed until after definitive open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is completed. Methods: An insurance claims database was queried for all patients with open lower extremity fractures between 2010 and 2020 who underwent free or axial flap reconstruction after ORIF. This cohort was stratified into three groups: reconstruction performed 0-3, 3-7, and 7+ days after ORIF. The primary outcome was 90-day complication and reoperation rates. Bivariate and multivariable regression of all-cause complications and reoperations was evaluated for time to flap as a risk factor. Results: A total of 863 patients with open lower extremity fractures underwent ORIF prior to flap soft tissue reconstruction. 145 (16.8%), 162 (18.8%), and 556 (64.4%) patients underwent soft tissue reconstruction 0-3 days, 4-7 days, and 7+ days after ORIF, respectively. The 90-day complication rate of surgical site infections (16.6%, 16,7%, 28.8%; p = 0.001) and acute osteomyelitis (5.5%, 6.2%, 27.7%; p < 0.001) increased with delayed soft tissue reconstruction. Irrigation and debridement rates were directly related to time from ORIF to flap (33.8%, 51.9%, 61.9%; p < 0.001). Hardware removal rates were significantly higher with delayed treatment (10.3%, 9.3%, 39.3%; p < 0.001). The 0-3 day (OR = 0.22; 95% CI: 0.15, 0.32) and 4-7 day (OR = 0.26; 95% CI: 0.17, 0.40) groups were protective factors against all-cause complications after bivariate and multivariate regression. Conclusion: Early soft tissue reconstruction of open lower extremity fractures performed within seven days of ORIF reduces complication rates and reduces the variability of complication rates including surgical site infections, acute osteomyelitis, and hardware failure.
