UK DNA working group eDNA week, January 2022

Abstract: Here, we report on eDNA week, an international conference held online as a five-day series of webinars from January 17, 2022, to January 21, 2022. The conference was organized by the UK DNA working group, which has witnessed considerable growth and application of eDNA research since its founding and first conference in 2014. The 2022 event, held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, provided an opportunity to invite international researchers who are leading the field, without the usual constraints of conference… Show more

“…Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a powerful and non-invasive tool with applications to particularly susceptible stocks. EDNA concentrations in water were positively correlated with the biomass of target species in 90% of the studies reviewed by Rourke et al (2022) and, along with eRNA, eDNA was also employed for freshwater and marine monitoring (reported by Handley et al, 2022). Once the reliability and repeatability of these technics are assessed, they can be embedded into management policies as it happened in the UK (reported by Handley et al, 2022).…”

Despite the bias derived the variability in the spatio-temporal distribution of eDNA in the marine environment (reviewed by Rourke et al, 2021), its successful application in the detection of the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in spatially distinct sampling locations (i.e., small spatial scales: largest straight distance between two sites was 1.3 and 6.2 km) (Nolan et al, 2022) could potentially make it appropriate to be implemented in the management of SSFs (i. e., monitoring of sites at regional scales).…”
