SNP g.1007A>G within the porcine DNAL4 gene affects sperm motility traits and percentage of midpiece abnormalities

Abstract: The flagellar beating of a spermatozoa's axoneme is caused by the varying activation and inactivation of dynein molecules. Dynein, axonemal, light chain 4 (DNAL4) is a functional candidate gene for sperm motility as it encodes a small subunit of the dyneins. We resequenced the porcine DNAL4 using three artificial insemination (AI) boars each with high (>68%) or low (<60%) motility, and detected 23 SNP. These were then genotyped for 82 AI boars. Using spermatological records, significantly negative genetic corr… Show more

“…The sperm of microminipigs had a weakly alkaline pH, similar to common pig breeds (33) and other strains of mini pigs (34). Quality characteristics such as sperm motility, morphological normality, and acrosome normality varied among individuals but were similar to those for other pig breeds (35)(36)(37)(38) and other mini pig strains (33). Ejaculate volume and total number of spermatozoa from microminipigs were smaller than those of standard pig breeds.…”

“…The genotypic effect was analysed for those SNPs located in intragenic or in flanking genomic regions of candidate genes, which have previously been shown to be significantly associated with a bone trait (see Table 1 ). SNP effects for each locus were analysed as described by Wiedemann et al [ 47 ]. For this purpose, the actual SNP genotypes were coded as ‘0’ (AA), ‘1’ (AB), or ‘2’ (BB), with the B allele representing the minor allele.…”
