Single‐Component Chemical Nose with a Hemicyanine Probe for Pattern‐Based Discrimination of Metal Ions

Abstract: We report here a chemical nose utilizing the nonspecificity of a hemicyanine dye (probe P) containing three acetates and one deprotonatable phenol groups. Unlike conventional pattern-based recognition that requires a combination of different probes, probe P alone is able to differentiate 9 different metals, generating distinctive absorption spectra and various patterns upon principle component analysis (PCA). River water samples and commercial mineral water samples were evaluated by the probe and were successf… Show more

“…The process for peroxidase-like activity investigation was the same as that of oxidase-like activity, except that the reaction system requires the addition of H 2 O 2 . In temperature-and pH-dependent catalytic performance experiments, CCP+Hg 2+ +TMB and CCP+Hg 2+ +TMB+H 2 O 2 were carried out under a series of pH values (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) and temperatures (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 °C). The final concentration of CCP, Hg 2+ , TMB, and H 2 O 2 in the reaction system was 50 μg mL −1 , 400 nM, 1 mM, and 50 mM, respectively.…”

“…The industrialization of modern civilization has brought about a series of environmental problems while satisfying the demand of people for a high quality of life. Heavy metal pollution is an environmental problem that has received widespread attention, especially mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) pollution. , According to the reported data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO), the maximum Hg 2+ concentrations approved in water are 2 and 6 ng·mL –1 , respectively . High levels of mercury in the human body can cause serious neurological diseases and even death, which exacerbates the pressure for trace detection of Hg 2+ .…”
