Role of pulmonary macrophages in initiation of lung metastasis in anaplastic thyroid cancer

Abstract: Several clinical studies have demonstrated that increased macrophage infiltration into tumors confers metastatic potential and poor prognosis in cancer. Preclinical studies are needed to develop new strategies for countering metastasis. Our study was designed to investigate the impact of pulmonary macrophages on lung metastasis of anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). ATC (CAL-62) and macrophage (Raw264.7) were transfected with the effluc (CAL-62/effluc, Raw264.7/effluc). Coculture and migration assays were used to… Show more

“…153 Some preclinical studies found that pulmonary macrophages play an important role in initiation of lung metastasis. [154][155][156] One study demonstrated that binding of TAMs to receptor VCAM-1 could provide a survival advantage to breast cancer cells in the lung microenvironment. 153 CAFs likely also play a major role in breast cancer metastasis.…”

“…Anaplastic thyroid cancer is rare, but it is one of the most aggressive types of human malignancies (25). There has previously been no effective therapeutic approach for the pulmonary metastases of ATC because of their resistance to conventional therapies (2, 10).…”
