I nternational A ssociation for S outheast E uropean A nthropology ( InASEA )

Abstract

The International Association for Southeast European Anthropology (InASEA), founded in 1999, is an interdisciplinary organization of scholars who study social and cultural processes manifested in the practices and beliefs of the people of Southeast Europe. Its members deal with Southeast European ethnology, cultural and social anthropology, folklore, ethnography, historical anthropology, and cognate disciplines. They come from the region as well as from other parts of the world, and share the conviction that anthropologically informed research is an essential element in understanding the current and past problems of Southeast Europe. The InASEA supports the development of anthropology in Southeast Europe and facilitates communication between scholars from the region and scholars elsewhere. It also aims at increasing the presence of Southeast European anthropology in the international anthropological discourse, which has been done in various ways but particularly through engagement with the World Council of Anthropological Associations. The InASEA organizes biennial conferences and publishes the annual journal Ethnologia Balkanica .
