Abstract

Enzo Faletto (1935–2003) was born in Santiago, Chile, and educated at the University of Chile and FLACSO, Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences. His main work is Dependencia y Desarrollo en América Latina, written with Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Faletto and Cardoso maintained that development in Latin America has to be historically contextualized, and the dynamics of social and political groups within nation‐states and their interrelationships with the elites of the central politico‐economic hegemon have determined the possibilities for and obstacles to social development. After the coup d'état in Chile in 1973, he remained working at FLACSO. Sociology departments were shut down. Once democracy was restored, Faletto returned to teaching at the University of Chile, where he remained as full professor of sociology until his death in 2003.
