DNA methylation biomarkers for noninvasive detection of triple‐negative breast cancer using liquid biopsy

Abstract: Noninvasive detection of aberrant DNA methylation could provide invaluable biomarkers for earlier detection of triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) which could help clinicians with easier and more efficient treatment options. We evaluated genome‐wide DNA methylation data derived from TNBC and normal breast tissues, peripheral blood of TNBC cases and controls and reference samples of sorted blood and mammary cells. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) between TNBC and normal breast tissues were stringently … Show more

“…Indeed, PIK3CA mutation was found in 83% of the metastatic tumor tissue [ 48 ]. Differentially methylated regions at the genome level between normal breast tissue and triple-negative breast cancer tissue demonstrate the utility of methylation signatures as non-invasive liquid biopsy markers for breast cancer diagnosis [ 49 ]. Circulating tumor cells can also be detected in the blood and used as a biomarker for the efficacy or otherwise of treatment of metastatic cancer [ 50 ].…”

“…A liquid biopsy provides a non‐invasive or minimally invasive method to extract genetic material from the tumour, with applications extending to early cancer detection, patient follow‐up, assessment of minimal residual disease and potential identification of molecular progression and the mechanism of resistance 8 . Numerous liquid biopsy‐based studies have been conducted in human cancers, including lung, colorectal and breast cancers 9–15 . Wasenang W et al 16 .…”
