DELAY OF GERMINATION 1‐LIKE 4 acts as an inducer of seed reserve accumulation

Abstract: Summary More than 70% of global food supply depends on seeds. The major seed reserves, such as proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides, are produced during seed maturation. Here, we report that DELAY OF GERMINATION 1‐LIKE 4 (DOGL4) is a major inducer of reserve accumulation during seed maturation. The DOGL family proteins are plant‐specific proteins of largely unknown biochemical function. DOGL4 shares only limited homology in amino acid sequence with DOG1, a major regulator of seed dormancy. DOGL4 was identifie… Show more

“…ABA induces and maintains PD, while GAs releases PD and induces germination. Accordingly, the dormancy status is regulated by the balance ABA: GAs, which will be used for the seed to interpret the environmental conditions and therefore stay dormant or germinate [1,[32][33][34][35]. Cold temperatures exposure of maternal plants during seed maturation induces an increase in both DOG1 and PD status [20].…”

“…Within the puzzle that constitutes the functioning of DOG1, the possibility of acting as a TF is currently being evaluated [32]. But there is still no scientific evidence that DOG1 works as a TF.…”

“…The findings described in Sall et al . () also provide significant insights into the evolution of seed‐related mechanisms such as reserve accumulation, desiccation tolerance, and dormancy. Further analyses into the molecular evolution of DOG1 family genes will also be an important next step in understanding seed and plant evolution, as well as how seed plants emerged.…”
