Computer‐aided process intensification of natural gas to methanol process

Abstract: The recent revolution in shale gas has presented opportunities for distributed manufacturing of key commodity chemicals, such as methanol, from methane. However, the conventional methane‐to‐methanol process is energy intensive which negatively affects the profitability and sustainability. We report an intensified process configuration that is both economically attractive and environmentally sustainable. This flowsheet is systematically discovered using the building block‐based representation and optimization m… Show more

“…UC IL , UC elec , UC hu , UC cu , and UC ref are the unit cost of IL, electricity, hot utility, cold utility, and refrigerant, respectively. We consider IL cost, electricity, hot utility, cold utility, and refrigerant cost to be $1000/kg, $19.4/GJ, $9.9/GJ, $1.9/GJ, and $18/GJ, respectively. In the seventh term, the parameter σ main is used to estimate the annual maintenance cost as a percentage of the fixed capital investment (FCI).…”

“…Thus, producing olefins from other resources is of great interest in recent years. Methanol to olefins (MTO) becomes a promising technology which has the potential to mitigate the dilemma for methanol can be produced from different resources, for example, coal, natural gas, , and biomass . Nevertheless, MTO generates notable byproducts of hydrocarbons, , the profits of which are much lower than ethylene and propylene.…”
