Background: Scorpion sting is a major health threatening problem in the world, while most victims in Iran are children. Identification of high-risk areas for scorpion stings and dispersal areas map can help to control, prevent, and take effective measures in a timely manner. Objectives: The current study aimed at investigating the scorpion stings and determining the distribution status and spatial analysis in Ardabil Province, NorthWest of Iran. Methods: The current cross sectional study collected the routine human scorpion stings information from health houses, healthcare centers, and hospitals of Ardabil Province from 2012 to 2017 in standard epidemiological surveillance forms. The current study employed Arc GIS 10.2.3 and the space map projection to provide spatial distribution maps of high-risk areas for scorpion stings. Results: Eight hundred fifteen cases of scorpion stings from all 10 counties of Ardabil Province were reported. During the study period, there was direct significant relationship between the increase of scorpion sting cases and temperature, as with 3°C average annual temperature increase, the incidence rate of scorpion sting increased from 5.45/100,000 in 2012 to 16.32/100,000 in 2017. Two hot zones of scorpion stings were detected in Khalkhal and Germi counties; the Southern and Northern areas of the province, respectively. Conclusions: According to the current study findings, there were some hot zones of scorpion stings in Southern and Northern areas of the province. In addition, since the increase of temperature and reduction of rainfall and humidity coincide with the increase of scorpion stings, it is expected that with the increase of temperature in the next years with regard to the global warming phenomenon, scorpion stings also increase in this province.

BackgroundScorpions are usually defined as predatory arachnids having venomous and painful stings. Scorpionism is considered as one of the health and medical problems in undeveloped tropical and subtropical countries in the world that endangers thousands of people annually.ObjectiveThis study was done for identification of scorpion fauna and scorpionism location in a high-risk area in southwest of Iran.MethodsThis study was carried out in Andimeshk district located in Khuzestan province which has the highest frequency of scorpionism in Iran. In total, 4 urban and 15 rural areas with various climates and topography were selected for monthly scorpion collection in 2016. Additionally, clinical data was obtained from questionnaires over a 5-year period (2012 to 2016) which were completed by physicians and health staff in hospitals and health centers. The data were analyzed by IBM-SPSS Version 20.ResultsA total of 850 scorpion samples with the most frequency in rural areas were collected. Eight species belonging to three families; Buthidae, Scorpionidae and Hemiscorpiidae were identified. A. crassicauda was the dominant species followed by H. lepturus. The largest collection due to scorpion’s activity was recorded in summer. The five-year prevalence of scorpion sting were 9.1/1000 inhabitants. The highest frequency of scorpionism was observed in the male age group of 25–34 years. Most cases had been treated with polyvalent scorpion antivenom within 6–12 hours of the sting.ConclusionBased on the findings, six species of medically important scorpions that were previously reported from Iran were also collected and caught in this study area. The findings of this study can be useful for policymakers at the Andimeshk Healthcare Center to prevent scorpionism and provide appropriate treatment for scorpionism cases.

Vaccination is the second most effective health measure to maintain public health and prevent diseases after providing safe drinking water. This study aimed to determine the geographical distribution of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in Qom Province in four years (2015–2018) using Geographic Information System (GIS). In this cross-sectional study, the indicators of VPDs surveillance were extracted from the VPDs surveillance system at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Qom University of Medical Sciences. They were further evaluated, and the incidences of VPDs in the study years were investigated. Finally, the spatial distribution map of VPDs was provided for surveillance quality in each Qom district by Arc GIS 10.3 software. The annual incidence rate (AIR) was estimated to be 18.47 for hepatitis B, 0.29 for measles, 0.13 for rubella, 0.09 for pertussis, 0.29 for diphtheria and 0.91 for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). The highest incidences of AFP, rubella and measles were observed in Markazi district. Salafchegan was a district with the highest incidence of diphtheria, and the highest incidence rate of hepatitis B was observed in Khalajestan district. In addition, all pertussis cases were reported from Qom city. According to thematic maps of GIS, the annual incidence rate of VPDs in Qom Province was lower than the mean rate in Iran. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended that a high immunization coverage should be done in the childhood and good surveillance indicators such as non-disease discarded rate, and the proportion of suspected cases with an adequate investigation should be used to monitor VPDs.
