Scorpio single radius total knee arthroplasty. A minimal five-year follow-up multicentric study

Abstract: Purpose Our goal was to evaluate the five-year follow-up results of the Scorpio single radius total knee arthroplasty. Method We performed a retrospective study based upon a multicentre database to evaluate the minimum five-year follow-up clinical and radiological results of 747 patients (831 knees) who underwent primary Scorpio single radius total knee arthroplasty. Results The mean age of the patients was 71.9 years. At a minimal five-year follow-up, 141 patients were lost to follow-up, 83 patients had died,… Show more

“…Abbas and Gunn28) reported a 99.3% survival rate on 173 primary PS TKA at 8 years. Similarly, Borrione et al29) reported a 95.2% survival rate at 6 years in the multicenter study. In contrast to Rand et al30), who reported a significantly lower survival rate for PS designs compared to CR designs, the survival curve of the CR group in the current study was similar to those of the other groups.…”

“…Previous publications have observed isolated failures of the Scorpio tibial component. 6,7,10,11,13 Based on their findings, it appeared that the majority of failures occurred at the cement-bone interface. Martin et al speculated that the large Deltafit Keel, a unique design feature of the Scorpio system, may be a possible cause for the anecdotal reports of tibial component failure.…”

“…The Scorpio Knee was quite successful and had clinically satisfactory outcomes compared with other knee systems on the market. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Despite its popularity and generally excellent outcomes, there were a few reports of early tibial failures due to aseptic loosening (AL). 11,13 AL has been described as a slowly advancing process in which biomaterial wear debris creates an inflammatory response, albeit low grade.…”
