Companies regard innovation as a central element of their business. However, as not all innovation types are the same, the central question is: should their announcements bring about the same effect on performance? This article analyses potential differences in firm value derived from the innovation-type announcements 'R&D', 'product' and 'process', made by intensive news-generating firms such as biotech companies. The empirical application shows a significantly positive reaction to innovation announcements, with the prospect of future innovation ('R&D' investment announcements) having greater impact on firm value than 'product' and 'process' innovations. Firm experience also acts as a moderator in this innovation-performance relationship, which is particularly relevant for entrepreneurs, who need to develop and send credible signals indicating the value of the firm's intangible assets to the market.

Purpose -Th e present paper adds to the most recent current of literature that highlights the importance of innovation in services, analyzing a setting -Portugal -which is relatively backward in terms of innovation performance.Design/methodology/approach -Based on a sample of 4128 companies (including 1489 service companies) that answered the Community Innovation Survey 2008, we assessed, by resorting to logistic regressions, the determinants of innovation performance in Portuguese companies.Findings -1) Workers who have the 1st cycle of higher education have a positive and signifi cant impact on the innovation of service companies whereas PhDs are detrimental to companies' innovative performance; 2) Companies in the service sector in general, and in KIBS in particular, that eff ectively invest in external and (continuous) internal R&D activities are more innovative; 3) External scientifi c sources of information for innovation are crucial (and much more than in manufacturing) to the innovation performance of service companies, especially of KIBS; 4) Similarly to manufacturing, participation in innovation activities in cooperation with foreign partners appears as a key factor in the innovative performance of service companies.Originality/value -The study demonstrates the influence of companies' openness and the relative importance attributed to diff erent sources of information for innovation on innovation outcomes of service companies (and KIBS) compared to manufacturing industries.

Diversified resources and academic influence: patterns of university–industry collaboration in Chinese research-oriented universities

This paper investigates the scope and patterns of university-industry collaborations (UICs) in Chinese research-oriented universities. Based on the co-authored publications in international journals by Chinese universities' academics and researchers from industries with the method of bibliometric and latent cluster analysis, this study provides detailed results on the characters and clustering features from two aspects, namely diversified resources and academic influence. The results show that, although the co-authored publications with industrial researchers only account for a small part of all publications of Chinese universities, the importance of cooperation with industries in the academic research and the scientific contribution have been strengthened in China. Meanwhile, the academic influence of coauthored publications is periodically improving, but still in the development stage of quantity rather than quality. The analyses demonstrate that there are significant differences in the matching relationship of diversified resources and academic influence between universities. Only few UICs are in both the high level of diversified resources and strong academic influence. Most of UICs should attempt to maintain diversified resources advantages whilst also try to enhance academic influence of cooperation outcomes.
