The newly developed cerium tribromide (CeBr 3 ) detector has reduced intrinsic gamma-ray activity with gamma energy restricted to 1400-2200 keV energy range. This narrower region of background gamma rays allows the CeBr 3 detector to detect more than one gamma ray to analyze the gamma-ray spectrum. Use of multiple gamma-ray intensities in elemental analysis instead of a single one improves the accuracy of the estimated results. Multigamma-ray detection capability of a cylindrical 75 mm × 75 mm (diameter × height) CeBr 3 detector has been tested by analyzing the chlorine concentration in water samples using eight chlorine prompt gamma rays over 517 to 8578 keV energies utilizing a D-D portable neutron generator-based PGNAA setup and measuring the corresponding minimum detection limit (MDC) of chlorine. The measured MDC of chlorine for gamma rays with 517-8578 keV energies varies from 0.07 ± 0.02 wt% to 0.80 ± 0.24. The best value of MDC was measured to be 0.07 ± 0.02 wt% for 788 keV gamma rays. The experimental results are in good agreement with Monte Carlo calculations. The study has shown excellent detection capabilities of the CeBr 3 detector for eight prompt gamma rays over 517-8578 keV energy range without significant background interference.

We present the development of a cerium-doped lanthanum bromide (LaBr 3 : Ce) gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) with the primary objective of determining the abundance and distribution of Th, U, K, and other major elements, including Fe on the entire planetary surface by measuring gamma-ray signals produced by radioactive decay, neutron inelastic scattering and neutron capture reactions in the energy region 0.03-8 MeV. The energy resolution of the LaBr 3 : Ce GRS developed in-house using front-end and processing electronics at 511 and 1274 keV is estimated to be 4.1% and 2.5% respectively. The intrinsic activity count rate for our 3  3 LaBr 3 : Ce GRS is ~61 counts s -1 (i.e. ~0.18 counts s -1 cm -3 ) for the 40 K energy window (1400-1520 keV) and ~3.4 counts s -1 for the 232 Th (2550-2700 keV) energy window. Although this large intrinsic activity of the LaBr 3 : Ce crystal inhibits estimation of the concentrations of Th and K, our attempts using a NaI(Tl) GRS (with electronics developed in-house) were more successful. The Th concentration of US-110 was estimated to be ~11.4 ppm and is within 14% of the 13.2 ppm value determined using a HPGe GRS. The K concentration of US-110 was estimated to be 0.87% and is within ~10% of the 0.78% value determined independently using a HPGe GRS.

In this review, the major achievements and research and development (R&D) trends from the last decade in the field of single crystal scintillator materials are described. Two material families are included, namely, those of halide and oxide compounds. In most cases, the host crystals are doped with Ce3+, Pr3+ or Eu2+ rare earth ions. Their spin‐ and parity‐allowed 5d–4f transitions enable a rapid scintillation response, on the order of tens to hundreds of nanoseconds. Technological recipes, extended characterization by means of optical and magnetic spectroscopies, and theoretical studies are described. The latter provide further support to experimental results and provide a better understanding of the host electronic band structure, energy levels of specific defects, and the emission centers themselves. Applications in medical imaging and dosimetry, security measures, high‐energy physics and the high‐tech industry, in which X(γ)‐rays or particle beams are used and monitored, are recognized as the main driving factor for R&D activities in this field.
