scikit-image: Image processing in Python

Abstract: scikit-image is an image processing library that implements algorithms and utilities for use in research, education and industry applications. It is released under the liberal "Modified BSD" open source license, provides a well-documented API in the Python programming language, and is developed by an active, international team of collaborators. In this paper we highlight the advantages of open source to achieve the goals of the scikit-image library, and we showcase several real-world image processing applicati… Show more

“…Drainage area is calculated from the model topography (Figure a) using the Landlab FlowDirectorD8 and FlowAccumulator components (Hobley et al, ), and channels are identified with a threshold drainage area. The selected channels are analyzed with a connected components algorithm (Van der Walt et al, ) to map connected channel systems across the fault (Figure b). Thalweg locations are automatically identified where channels intersect profiles on both sides of the fault.…”

“…Paper sheets with leaves were digitized using either a flatbed scanner or a digital photo camera. The obtained images were further processed using the Python module scikit‐image (Van der Walt et al., ). Individual leaves were segmented using an intensity thresholding approach.…”

“…In addition to end-user software, open-source libraries for scripting languages such as MATLAB or Python (Coelho, 2013; van der Walt et al, 2014) offer access to skeletonization methods. In particular, Python and its scientific libraries have become widely used in interdisciplinary research and education (Deutsch, 2014).…”
