Scientific research in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: bibliometric analysis in SCOPUS, 1991–2012

Abstract: Scientific production on OSA is increasing with limited international collaboration. The country with the greatest production in this period (1991-2012) was the USA, which concentrated the international collaboration network on OSA. We recommended that articles should be produced with international collaboration to improve the quantity of scientific publications and their chances of publication in high impact journals.

“…Collaboration in social, psychological and therapeutic research could be established between developed and developing countries. A bibliometric study on sleep apnea showed that the probability of citation increased by 1.23 times for each additional author, and by 2.23 times for each additional country represented; independent of time since publication, journal, or the country of the author (Huamani et al 2015). …”

“…International collaboration in research is highly needed and should be encouraged since most low and middle income countries cannot fund such research and might not have the advanced technical and medical tools used to investigate poverty-related diseases or health issues. Furthermore, international collaboration increases the quality of publications and chances of articles to be cited and published in high impact journals (Huamani et al 2015). …”

“…Some of our findings are similar to those reported in other scientific topics, particularly that the United States dominates world scientific production. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] As in other citation analyses, several shortcomings need to be addressed in the current study. First, the exclusive use of pleural effusion as the search parameter may have resulted in the overlooking of some articles which employed other key terms (eg, empyema, pleurodesis, thoracentesis, etc).…”
