Scientific Opinion on the use of animal-based measures to assess welfare in pigs

Abstract: Animal-based measures, identified on the basis of scientific evidence, can be used effectively in the evaluation of the welfare of on-farm pigs in relation to laws, codes of practice, quality assurance schemes and management. Some of these measures are also appropriate for ante-mortem inspection and there are additional post-mortem animal-based measures which can be taken at the slaughterhouse. Non-animal-based measures can be used when the association between them and the welfare outcome is strong and when th… Show more

“…Loose housing systems without farrowing crates seem to be advantageous in this regard (3), and thus several are currently being researched to improve animal welfare. To evaluate housing systems concerning animal welfare, specific indicators, which refer mostly to physical impacts and the animals' behavior are used (4). However, a housing system should also be evaluated regarding the level of stress which the animals experience there (5).…”

“…However, tail lesions being of multifactorial aetiology are useful indicators of pig health and welfare in general. Hence they are suggested 'iceberg' indicators [10][11][12] and could be used to detect deficiencies in farm management and thereby minimise unnecessary costs. As shown in the current study, HSTL farms had a lower annual net profit caused by increased feed usage and cost associated with more days to slaughter.…”
