Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for vitamin E as α‐tocopherol

Abstract: Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) derived Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for vitamin E. In this Opinion, the Panel considers vitamin E as α-tocopherol only. The Panel considers that Average Requirements (ARs) and Population Reference Intakes (PRIs) for vitamin E (as α-tocopherol) cannot be derived for adults, infants and children, and therefore defines Adequate Intakes (AIs), based on observed intakes in healthy populations wit… Show more

“…a-Tocopherol (vitamin E) is an important micronutrient and antioxidant that prolongs the shelf life of the oil and food products containing the oil (OECD, 2009). Considering the relatively minor consumption of cottonseed oil and its negligible contribution to the total intake of vitamin E (EFSA NDA Panel, 2015), the observed increase of a-tocopherol in cotton GHB614 9 LLCotton25 9 MON 15985 is considered to be of no concern as regards human nutrition.…”

“…Vitamin E as a-tocopherol Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin (EFSA NDA Panel, 2015h). Previously, the term vitamin E was used as the generic term for four tocopherols (α, β, γ, δ) and four tocotrienols (α, β, γ, δ), which are organic compounds that possess antioxidant activity to a different degree.…”

“…Beneficial effects on human health of EVOO are well known, and these can be correlated with the presence of a well-balanced acidic composition, and especially to the presence of fat-soluble vitamin and hydrophilic phenolic compounds (vitamin E and phenols) [3][4][5][6]. Vitamin E is composed of eight isomers, and in EVOO is principally represented by α-tocopherol [7], that is the isomer with the greatest biological activity [8,9].…”
