Schwannoma of the Tentorium Cerebelli in a Child

Abstract: Intracranial schwannomas not arising from a cranial nerve are very rare. Schwannomas of the dura are even rarer; in the literature, we found only two cases: a schwannoma of the falx and one of the torcula. We report a third case of a 9-year-old girl with a schwannoma of the tentorium cerebelli. The different theories concerning the origin of this tumor in this particular location are discussed.

“…1 The patients were a 17-year-old teenager and a 12-year-old boy. 2,4,5,26 The tumors located in the tentorial region are listed in Table 2. This patient was a 17-year-old girl with multiple schwannomas attached to the falx, but she had a history of surgery for excision of left intraparenchymal frontomedial schwannoma 7 years earlier and seeding of the tumour cells during previous surgery was presumed.…”

“…2,6,9,10) Three patients had visual disturbance, although one of these patients showed no deficit in neurological examinations. 2,6,10) The main location of the tentorial schwannomas was infratentorial, with no cases of supratentorial schwannoma with tentorial attachment. 1,2,6,9,10) In all cases, the tumor originated from the tentorium and was mainly located in the anteromedial cerebellar region with extension into the ambient cistern.…”

“…In fact, the MR imaging findings indicated meningioma in these three cases. 3,8,9) The origin of tentorial schwannomas with no involvement of cranial nerves remains controversial. The most plausible explanation is origin from the Schwann cells of the tentorial nerves which contain many myelinated nerve fibers of medium size.…”
