This article investigates sources of motivation for organisational engagement in different sociopolitical contexts. On the grounds of my own qualitative data, this text aims to answer the main research question: ‘Why do Czech and German university students get involved in political and civic organisations?’ The analysis also shows how the perception and understanding of politics differ according to the types of political motivation. The research draws upon a unique dataset of 60 interviews with university students conducted in former East (Jena) and West Germany (Mannheim, Cologne), and the Czech Republic (Prague, Ostrava and Olomouc). The results identify the notion of influence as a core factor for joining a political group and forming political commitment among the young generation. The article introduces a personal typology of political motivation, which extends existing theories and frames them in the pathways to politics of young Czech and German activists. It distinguishes three main motivations: idealistic, doer and pragmatic with a variety of subtypes. The paper elaborates on classical typologies refraining from membership. These outcomes have practical implications for the recruitment of new party members.

Tato studie se zabývá jedním z důležitých, avšak opomíjených aspektů občanského vzdělávání, a to zobrazováním Evropské unie v učebnicích. Usiluje o co nejkomplexnější analýzu obsahu a formy kapitol o Evropské unii ve 22 didaktických materiálech (učebnicích, pracovních sešitech a příručkách učitele) občanské výchovy a vlastivědy v českých základních školách. Text zodpoví následující tři skupiny otázek: 1) Kolik prostoru je Evropské unii věnováno na stránkách těchto učebnic? 2) V jakých souvislostech je Evropská unie zmiňována? Na jaké aktéry a témata je kladen důraz? Vyskytuje se v učebnicích hodnocení EU a její relevance pro jednotlivé skupiny aktérů? 3) Jaké didaktické postupy a úlohy pro žáky navrhují učebnice ve výuce o EU? Jakým způsobem je v nich učivo prezentováno po vizuální stránce? K zodpovězení těchto otázek bude použita kvantitativní a kvalitativní obsahová analýza. Studie ukázala, že k EU je přistupováno převážně z perspektivy žáka a je zobrazována především kladně. Během let se vyvíjí rámování my versus oni a učebnice prezentují Českou republiku jako aktivní součást evropských struktur. Úlohy pro žáky jsou v učebních textech sice rozmanité, ale nepříliš analyticky zaměřené a nevedou žáky ke kritické práci se zdroji informací. Cílem textu je rovněž nabídnout doporučení pro autory učebnic i pedagogy. Výsledky studie jsou zasazeny do mezinárodního kontextu.

Despite many extensive and fruitful studies, assessing and analysing active citizenship behaviours in various cultural contexts remains a topic of research interest. A significant proportion of citizenship studies rely on evidence from adolescents, with their expected participation as the dependent variable rather than the actual civic engagement of adults. Prior research has also neglected to examine the internal civic self-efficacy of adult citizens, particularly concerning gender differences. Based on new data obtained from 731 Turkish citizens over eighteen, this study examines the effects of political media use, civic knowledge, civic self-efficacy, and gender, along with other demographic variables, on civic engagement and participation. We investigate research evidence that women’s tendency to interest in unconventional activities at a higher rate than men would make a difference and enhance their civic self-efficacy. Findings indicate that, at the empirical level, active citizenship is a multidimensional and interrelated concept with dimensions of civic knowledge, civic self-efficacy, engagement, and participation. Civic self-efficacy was found to be a psychological construct that predicts adult citizens’ active citizenship behaviours. Contrary to our hypothesis, gender differences in civic self-efficacy in community engagement closely related to daily life remain present, although women are expected to prefer greater participation than men. Only education indicated some equalising effect. Based on our findings, we suggest that research on citizenship should consider not only whether society values what women do, but also whether it promotes what they value.
