Are Adolescents Engaged in the Problematic Use of Social Networking Sites More Involved in Peer Aggression and Victimization?

The problematic use of social networking sites is becoming a major public health concern. Previous research has found that adolescents who engage in a problematic use of social networking sites are likely to show maladjustment problems. However, little is known about its links with peer aggression and victimization. The main goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between problematic use of online social networking sites, peer aggression –overt vs. relational and reactive vs. instrumental–, and peer victimization –overt physical and verbal, and relational–, taking into account gender and age (in early and mid-adolescence). Participants were selected using randomized cluster sampling considering school and class as clusters. A battery of instruments was applied to 1,952 adolescents' secondary students from Spain (Andalusia) (50.4% boys), aged 11 to 16 (M = 14.07, SD = 1.39). Results showed that girls and 14–16 adolescents were more involved in a problematic use of online social networking sites. Furthermore, adolescents with high problematic use of online social networking sites were more involved in overt—reactive and instrumental—and relational—reactive and instrumental—aggressive behaviors, and self-reported higher levels of overt—physical and verbal—and relational victimization. Even though boys indicated higher levels of all types of victimization, girls with high problematic use of online social networking sites scored the highest on relational victimization. Relating to age, early adolescents (aged 11–14) with higher problematic use of online social networking sites reported the highest levels of overt verbal and relational victimization. Overall, results suggested the co-occurrence of problematic use of online social networking sites, peer aggression and victimization. In addition, results showed the influence that gender and age had on peer victimization. This study highlights the continuity between offline and online domains with regard to maladjustment problems in adolescence.

La violencia entre pares afecta negativamente la salud mental de los estudiantes. La literatura señala que la satisfacción con la vida es uno de los factores que puede verse mayormente afectado. No obstante, pueden existir factores que atenúen estos efectos negativos. La presente investigación indagó en la influencia que tiene el apoyo de profesores y pares en la escuela sobre la satisfacción con la vida en estudiantes que reportan agresiones de sus pares. El estudio censal incluyó a 5.527 estudiantes de 4° a 8° grado de educación básica de 44 establecimientos municipales de una comuna de la Región de Valparaíso, Chile. Usando cuestionarios autoaplicados de la encuesta "La Convivencia en mi Escuela", cuyos datos se analizaron usando modelos de ecuaciones estructurales, se encontró que el apoyo social de los profesores tiene un efecto más importante que el de los pares como mediador en la relación inversa entre victimización entre pares y satisfacción con la vida de los estudiantes. Estos hallazgos son discutidos respecto del papel mediador de los profesores en la victimización entre pares.Palabras clave: victimización, satisfacción vital, apoyo social, bienestar, bullying Violence among peers has a negative effect on students' mental health. The literature indicates that life satisfaction is one of the factors on which peer violence could have a major effect. Nevertheless, some factors may attenuate this negative impact. This study analyzed the influence of teacher and peer support on the relation between students' peer victimization and life satisfaction. The sample included 5,527 students from grades 4 through 8 attending municipal schools in one district of the Region of Valparaíso, Chile. Using self-report questionnaires taken from the survey "Coexistence in my School", whose data was analyzed with structural equation modeling, it was observed that teacher social support has a greater effect than peer social support as a mediator in the inverse relationship between students' peer victimization and life satisfaction. These findings are discussed in terms of the mediating role of teachers in reducing the effects of peer victimization. Verifying the ecological model of peer aggression on Croatian students

Using the ecological approach, the goal of this study was to determine the predictors of physical and verbal peer aggressive behavior. The participants were 880 school students from the fifth to eighth grade (48% boys and 52% girls) and the same number of parents (19% fathers and 61% mothers) as well as 107 teachers. The main analysis was performed using multivariate–multilevel modeling. The following significant predictors of physical peer aggression were obtained: Boys, a greater degree of impulsivity, more parental punishment, poorer school success, more time spent with the media, and the perception of great neighborhood dangerousness. For verbal peer aggression, the significant predictors were: A greater degree of impulsivity, lower level of affective empathy, more parental punishment, lack of parental supervision, lesser peer acceptance, large differences in family income, more time spent with the media, and the perception of great neighborhood dangerousness. A moderating effect of neighborhood dangerousness and parental supervision was found. The results were interpreted within Bronfenbrenner's ecological model.
