Scholastic achievements of children with brain tumors at the end of comprehensive education

Abstract: Few patients with brain tumor missed the ninth grade certificate at the age of 16. Grades in foreign language (representing verbal performance) were most affected. However, the patients fared poorer than controls in each subject. The difference was most pronounced among girls. Girls were more sensitive to the adverse effects of irradiation.

“…Men with brain cancer, however, appear to have the same marriage probability as cancer-free men. Studies suggest that the effect of radiation treatment may be more severe for female brain cancer survivors [24], and that psychosocial outcomes may be worse [50]. Social explanations tied to gender roles are, however, also possible [28].…”

“…On the one hand, cancer may operate through these factors in affecting the marriage rate. Cancer in childhood or during adolescent years may, for instance, reduce the chances of getting a higher education [24,25], with long-term implications for marriage opportunities. Cancer illness may also interfere with work capability and income opportunities [26,27], and a lower income is, in turn, likely to reduce the chances of marriage, especially for men.…”

“…Previous research also showed that CNS-directed therapies, usually used as treatment regimens for patients with CNS-tumours, leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, induced learning difficulties [9]. Previously, educational achievements have mainly been studied among survivors of brain tumours and leukaemia with main focus on lower levels of education [10,11], and the study populations were rather small [12,13]. Our aim was to obtain an overall understanding of the educational attainments and choice of educational fields among the 5-year cancer survivors (diagnosed <19 years) in Norway compared with the cancer-free population.…”

“…[3][4][5] Educational difficulties among survivors have been reported by survivors, parents, and teachers. [6][7][8] Survivors attain lower levels of education, [9][10][11][12] have increased use of special education services, [13][14][15][16] and have a greater likelihood of grade repetition.…”

“…Both survivors of CNS tumors and leukemia survivors had lower ninth grade results than controls, and radiation treatment was a major factor. 4,5 The Childhood/Adolescent/Young Adult Cancer Survivors (CAYACS) Research Program has assembled a cohort of all 5-year survivors of a cancer or tumor diagnosed before age 25 years in British Columbia (BC) from 1970 and population sample comparison groups from provincial registries and has linked these records to provincial administrative datasets. Within this program, our objectives for this study were to compare survivors' educational outcomes, including multiple standardized tests, with outcomes in the general student population, and to identify factors associated with poor achievement.…”
