Scholarly networks on resilience, vulnerability and adaptation within the human dimensions of global environmental change

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a bibliometric analysis of the knowledge domains resilience, vulnerability and adaptation within the research activities on human dimensions of global environmental change. We analyzed how 2286 publications between 1967 and 2005 are related in terms of co-authorship relations, and citation relations. The number of publications in the three knowledge domains increased rapidly between 1995 and 2005. However, the resilience knowledge domain is only weakly connected with the other… Show more

“…Following Tranfield, Denyer, and Smart (2003) framework for systematic reviews designed specifically for the management field, we made a holistic evaluation on the topic mentioned above. As a pilot search, we used "seed" papers (Janssen, Schoon, Ke, & Börner, 2006) to allocate the other actors of interaction with Board of Directors in the present literature, except the CEO. We identified the seed papers group by choosing from literature that we were personally familiar with.…”

“…This work was specifically operational, seeking action, but resulted in cutting-edge and pioneering scientific publications. Yet more modern literature bypasses that work, introducing myths such as Janssen et al (2006) implying that Liverman (1990) -a piece not covering islands -was the first publication to link 'the term vulnerability to global environmental change' (Janssen et al, 2006: 248).…”

“…2 As such, the concept of vulnerability is deeply intertwined with related concepts including, but not limited to, hazards, risk, adaptation, 3 adaptive capacity, 4 coping capacity, and resilience (Janssen et al 2006;Gallopín 2006;Eakin and Luers 2006;Malone 2009;Turner 2010;Romero-Lankao and Qin 2011;Cardona et al 2012;Romero-Lankao et al 2013). It is beyond the scope of this paper to comprehensively review and parse the research and literature related to these concepts.…”
