Introduction: Scholarly impact has been used to measure faculty productivity and academic contribution throughout academia. Traditionally, the number of articles authored has been the primary metric for scholarly impact regarding academic promotion and reputation. We hypothesize that over time, the nature of authorship has evolved to include more authors per research article throughout the history of orthopaedic literature. Methods: Bibliometric data for all original research article abstracts were extracted from PubMED for the 10 highest rated H5-index orthopaedic clinical journals (“ American Journal of Sports Medicine ,” “ Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery American Volume ,” “ Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research “ Spine ,” “ Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy ,” “ Journal of Arthroplasty ,” “ Arthroscopy ,” “ The Spine Journal ,” “ European Spine Journal ,” and “ Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery British Volume/Bone & Joint Journal ”). The number of authors per article was then analyzed over time using the Cochran-Armitage trend test. Results: A total of 106,529 original articles were analyzed over a 70-year period. The number of authors increased significantly over time from a mean of 1.4 authors (SD: 0.62) in 1946 to 5.7 authors (SD: 3.1) in 2019, representing an average relative increase of 4.3% per year ( P < 0.05). The three oldest journals had the lowest average authors ( Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Am Volume : 1946, mean 3.7 authors [SD: eight]; Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Br Volume/Bone & Joint Journal : 1948, mean: 3.6 authors [SD: 7.5]; Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research : 1963, mean 3.3 authors [SD: 2.9]). The three newest journals had the highest average authors ( European Spine Journal : 1992, mean 5.3 authors [SD: 3.3]; Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy : 1993, mean 5.5 authors [SD: 6.7 authors; The Spine Journal : 2003, mean 5.2 authors [SD: 3.6]). Discussion: Original research articles published in orthopaedic academic journals have experienced an increase in authorship over time. Although our data cannot explain what has driven this change, increasing cooperation between collaborators may represent less contribution per author over time.

Introduction: Understanding the trend of student authorship is crucial in determining its correlation to scholarly impact for corresponding authors. Our objective is to investigate student authorship rates over time in articles published in JAMA Internal Medicine (IM), as well as to examine potential effects student authors have on scholarly impact scores of corresponding authors via H-index measures. Methods: Authorship data including student authors (SA), first student authors, and corresponding authors (CA) from prior JAMA IM publications between 2010 and 2018 were collected, with a total of 701 studies. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent sample t-tests were performed to assess for differences in the mean by publishing year and student authorship, respectively. Results: Of 4591 total authors, 683 (14.9%) were considered student authors. The percentage of student authorship increased from 46.3% to 58.0% between 2010 and 2018, respectively. No difference in average H-indices of CA between SA and non-SA groups (overall NSA H i mean: 30.2, vs SA H i mean: 32.1, p=0.371) was noted. Discussion: Student participation in research is not a disadvantage to scholarly impact for corresponding authors. Increased student authorship reflects a promising trend towards greater student participation in research within the field of medicine.

An analysis of surgical literature trends over four decadesThe impact of surgical research is far reaching, necessitating the importance of ongoing changes in this large and heterogeneous community. Given the intensity and duration of surgical training, surgical investigators may be at a disadvantage given the difficulties of procuring non-clinical time, which may be reflected by the paucity of pinnacle studies (randomized controlled-trials) within the surgical literature. 1,2 Surgeons dedicated to advancing the field through research sometimes rely on weaker, albeit more pragmatic, study designs. Even as early as 1990, evidence shows no significant increase in the quantity of high impact studies in major surgical journals. 2 Furthermore, dedicated training during residency in high quality research design, implementation and basis science investigations are deficient. 3,4 One study found that 75% of senior faculty who performed research did so in basic science, compared to 60% of junior faculty and only 53% of trainees. 5 This may in part be secondary to surgical funding. The National Institute of Health's funding to surgical departments decreased 19% from 2003 to 2013, which is in contrast to an increase in funding for non-surgical departments. 6 Furthermore, fluctuations in surgical fellowships, as a result of increasing specialization in surgery, may be affecting the amount and types of available research opportunities. We therefore set out to provide a descriptive study to determine trends in the types of surgical research being performed in all specialties over the last four decades.
