Schneiderian Papillomas of the Pharynx

Abstract: Sixteen cases of schneiderian-type mucosal papillomas arising in the nasopharynx and oropharynx are reported. The patients include 11 men and 5 women ranging in age from 45 to 79 years (median 62 years). In 12 patients, the papilloma was discovered as an incidental finding, and 2 patients complained of nasal airway obstruction. In the remaining 2 cases, information regarding the cause that led to discovery was unavailable. None of the patients had a prior or concurrent history of sinonasal (schneiderian) papil… Show more

“…In this context it should be mentioned that it has been claimed that the papillary variant of PLGA shows a more aggressive behaviour than the nonpapillary variants [30,41]. Schneiderian papillomas (SP) may be seen in the nasopharynx [42,43]. SP occurring in this site display the same histological features (non-keratinizing squamous-, ''transitional-type''-, and pseudostratified epithelium with oncocytoid characteristics), as seen in the sinonasal area and which differ from the hyalinized fibrovascular cores lined by the bland cuboidal to columnar cells in LGPACNP.…”

“…They have been recorded in middle ear-mastoid (34), pharynx (35,36), nasopharynx (37), lacrimal sac (38), and possibly in the wall of a branchial cleft cyst (39). It has been suggested that ectopic migration of the Schneiderian membrane during embryogenesis could account for these aberrant papillomas in sites contiguous with the sinonasal tract (2).…”

“…It amounts, according to different studies, between 5.7-32%[25]. On the other side, the correlation among inverted papilloma and squamous cell carcinomas is well documented.Current literature shows this correlation somewhere between 10-25 %[13][14][15][16].…”
