“…Collectively, the study by Cardoso et al ( 83 ) implied that Tregs might play a key role in this process of immune modulation. However, different insights were obtained with Sm29 in a human study by de Almeida et al ( 38 ), in which by employing peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from asthmatic patients, Sm29 and Sm29TSP-2 (a chimeric antigen comprised of Sm29 and SmTSP-2) were tested for their ability to modulate lymphocyte activation in response to the house dust mite allergen Der p1 . The addition of both antigens to PMBC cultures from asthmatic subjects stimulated with Der p1 showed an increased frequency of CD4 + CD25 hi T lymphocytes and a decreased frequency in the population of CD4 + CD25 low cells compared with unstimulated groups; in contrast, no significant difference was observed in the frequency of CD4 + CD25 hi T cells expressing Foxp3 in the cultures stimulated with Der p1 in the presence or absence of either antigen ( 38 ).…”

“…Parasitic helminths have immunosuppressive effects in the intestine and have been investigated as treatments for inflammatory disorders including IBD, multiple sclerosis, asthma and atopy . Schistosoma mansoni antigens can increase Treg frequencies and IL‐10 production from PBMCs isolated from patients with asthma . Likewise, stimulation of PBMCs with an excretory/secretory antigen from Marshallagia marshalli decreased expression of IFN‐γ and IL‐4 and increased expression of IL‐10 and TGF‐β .…”

“…Schistosoma antigens modulate airway inflammation via IL-10 and/or CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Tregs in mice 11,13 and change cytokine secretion and the activation of lymphocytes from asthmatic patients. 14 However, infectious or whole proteins may elicit side effects to patients. Therefore, seeking small molecules from helminths, such as peptides, for use as immunomodulatory drugs, can be a safe choice for preventing and treating asthma.…”
