Schisandrin B protects PC12 cells against oxidative stress of neurodegenerative diseases

Abstract: Increasing evidence places Schisandrin B (Sch B) at an important position in nerve protection, indicating that Sch B might play a positive role in the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases. However, there is little information on it. Our studies showed that pretreatment with Sch B could reduce lactate dehydrogenase, malondialdehyde, and reactive oxygen species release and significantly increase the cell viability and the superoxide dismutase level. Sch B (10 μM) markedly inhibited cell apoptosis, whereas LY294… Show more

“…Schisandrin B is the most abundant dibenzocyclooctadiene derivative in extracted from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis Baill and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat physiological functions disorders, especially improve cardiac [18] and injured liver [10] as well as protects neural cell from oxidative stress [8]. In addition, Schisandrin B has been reported to possess antitumor activity in various human cancers.…”

“…Baill ( 19 ). SchB has been shown to alleviate damage in a number of different types of tissues and cells, including hepatocytes ( 20 , 21 ), nerve cells ( 22 ), renal tissues ( 23 ) and cardiomyocytes ( 24 , 25 ). Additionally, SchB has been demonstrated to have a potent anticancer effect ( 26 ).…”

“…31,32 Antioxidant treatment signicantly increased the cell viability, SOD activity and GSH level, which may function via the modulation of Nrf2 pathway. [33][34][35] In this study, the mRNA expressions of Nrf2 and associated antioxidation and detoxication enzymes (HO-1, NQO1 and TXNRD1) were upregulated upon H 2 O 2 stimulation, while their expression were further upregulated by caffeic acid sulfonamide derivative pretreatment.…”
