Schema-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders.

Abstract: Up until the mid-1990s, conventional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for the eating disorders (e.g., Fairburn, 1997) was based largely on models of psychopathology that were developed 2 decades ago (e.g., Fairburn, 1981;Garner & Bemis, 1982). These were largely maintenance models, which address the factors that sustain the eating disorder once it has developed but do not attempt to explain its etiology. Trials of CBT based on such models have demonstrated an impressive effectiveness rate among relatively sp… Show more

“…Longitudinal studies have a particularly valuable contribution to make and would permit rigorous testing of some of the ideas highlighted including the suggestion that cognitions may be precursors of later distress and eating disorder psychopathology. Schema have an important role in recent theoretical writings on eating disorders 21,34 and their presence and nature in related conditions, including overweight adolescents and children, warrants further investigation. Such work has the potential to further our understanding of how eating disorders might develop.…”

“…In particular, we were unable to find a study in overweight adolescents that explored the cognitions that have been linked to eating disorders including schema that may be associated with eating disorder psychopathology. As noted by Waller et al 21 in their review of the literature on schemas in the eating disorders, children and adolescents represent a group whose cognitions are particularly in need of further research attention.…”

“…Ce type de thérapie, efficace pour des patients avec un TPL, est utile pour des patientes qui souffrent de boulimie (Safer et al, 2009). La thérapie cognitive basée sur les sché mas de Young démontre également une efficacité auprès des patientes TA (Waller et al, 2007). Cette thérapie permet d'aborder les difficultés des clients à leur source, en modifiant les croyances centrales (schémas) que les patients démontrent à propos d'eux-mêmes et des autres.…”

“…However it is also an ongoing activity. As new information comes to light in the form of new disclosures by the client or the manner in which the client responds to the therapist's interventions, the formulation is likely to be refined, elaborated or even radically altered (e. g. Waller, Kennerley & Ohanian, 2007).…”
